Instagram’s chief Mosseri testified that he doesn’t even believe social media is clinically addictive, preferring the term “problematic use” for when someone spends more time online than they feel good about.”

He also warned that there’s always a trade-off – users push back if a platform removes too many features in the name of safety.

In essence, Facebook and YouTube argue they’re doing their best to balance safety and user enjoyment, and that teen mental health is a complex issue beyond any single app. They bristle at the lawsuit’s claim of deliberate malice, saying outcomes like Kaley’s are tragic but caused by a constellation of factors, not a scheming algorithm.

And lurking behind their defense is a legal fortress that has protected them for decades: Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which shields platforms from liability for content posted by users. Meta and Google assert that, at the end of the day, it was things other users said or posted that harmed Kaley, not any inherently dangerous “product” they sold her.
